Sensodyne: Introduces Repair & Protect!

What is tooth sensitivity?
Tooth sensitivity occurs when the dentine underneath the tooth enamel becomes exposed. When exposed dentine comes into contact with hot or cold, sweet, sour or even your toothbrush it can trigger the nerve, causing a short sharp pain.

NEW TECHNOLOGICAL BREAKTHROUGH:
Repair & Protect

“Helps repair sensitive areas of your teeth”

How does the new Sensodyne Repair & Protect work?

New Sensodyne Repair & Protect is different from other toothpastes. It has a unique, clinically proven concentrated calcium formula that helps repair vulnerable areas with the natural building blocks of your teeth.

¬When Being Sensitive Becomes A Bad Thing
Nobody wants to be around an insensitive person.
You know the type–the guy who never thinks twice when speaking his mind. The tactless girl who spills everybody’s secrets. The abrasive ones.
But neither does anyone want to be someone who’s too sensitive.
We Pinoys have a term for it: balat-sibuyas. The one who’s easily hurt or offended from the smallest joke. The one who can’t take a chill pill and raises an insurrection against anything that remotely makes a negative observation about his or her quirks.
To think about it, being too sensitive might even be worse than insensitivity.
And no, it’s not just emotions we’re talking about.
Let’s Talk About Dentine Hypersensitivity
In the study entitled “The everyday impact of dentine sensitivity: personal and functional aspects”1, conducted by professionals from the University of Sheffield and the University of Toronto, the researchers noted that “the emotional impact of dentine sensitivity is directly linked to the major distressing factor of the oral condition – pain, its unpredictability and detrimental effect on natural and supposedly pleasant daily routines of food consumption. Affective evaluation of physical pain occurs simultaneously or soon after sensitivity episodes, in bringing mind and body, invoking ‘displeasure, anxiety, sadness and anger that are fully emotional.’”
In the Philippines, a consumer survey revealed that 7 out of 10 Filipinos* have sensitive teeth. 78% of people experience the phenomenon known as pangingilo when eating or drinking something cold, while 47% experience this when eating or drinking something sour, and 45% reported pain when consuming hot food or drinks**. However, because of the natural tendency to dismiss this condition, dentine hypersensitivity persists, to the detriment of its sufferers.

Yes – Pinoys are Too Sensitive

Remember when some of us launched a Twitter war versus an international teenage singing sensation and his horde of fans when the famous teen pop star posted mocking photos of a Filipino boxing hero right after his crushing defeat?

How about the Amerasian actress who “doesn’t want to look Filipino” incident? Or when we cried foul because a Hollywood actress said Manila was infested with rats and cockroaches?

Fine – maybe it’s a matter of us Pinoys defending the national pride.

NOVAMIN® formula releases the building blocks of teeth: calcium and phosphate. These ions form a protective mineral layer to repair the vulnerable areas of the tooth.

Usage:
Brush twice a day and not more than three times, minimize swallowing and spit out. Close cap after each use to protect contents from moisture. Do not use if foil seal on the nozzle is broken. Remove foil seal before use.

Suggested retail price for Sensodyne Repair & Protect is Php198.00. Available nationwide in leading supermarkets, drugstores, groceries, hypermarkets and department stores.

But here’s a thought: what if we’re just being too sensitive?

Funnily, a recent global poll revealed that Filipinos are the most emotional people – ranking higher than El Salvador, Bahrain, Oman, and Colombia.1

Are we too sensitive for our own good? Maybe.

And surprisingly, we’re not just talking about emotions here.

Hypersensitive Filipinos

In a consumer survey conducted, results revealed that 7 out of 10 Filipinos* have sensitive teeth – a condition Pinoys often refer to as pangingilo.

Comida Villas and Spaoay: Ilocano Food and Massage

Last September 15, me and a group of bloggers were invited for a night of pampering and food. We headed into Comida Villas, it's an Ilocano boutique restaurant located along the bustling road of Timog Avenue in Quezon City. That night seems to be Ilocano theme since the restaurant and the spa were both Ilocano inspired.  Both of the establishments are being manage by Chef Danny Dela Cuesta who hails from Northern part of the Philippines - Ilocos.

Even it was a rainy night, everybody was present at the venue though some bloggers came early and some came late because of the bad weather. The restaurant was a full house indeed. The interiors of the restaurant was mixed from traditional to modern interiors like the wall decorations of an old window from bahay na tisa.

While waiting for my food, I ordered Champola as my drink. The drink that has a different name on the menu that made me interested to order it. It is a sparkling drink made from Guyabano (Soursop) and Pineapple fruit juices. No regrets, I love it! :)

Adobo Pâté with sliced Pandesal and Pandesal with Vigan Longganisa and Kesong Puti was served to everyone as an appetizer.

Pâté is a mixture of cooked ground meat and fat minced into a spreadable paste.

The dishes in Comida Villas were made with a distinct flavor and international fusion which makes it special. The starters are already a winner for me!
Even the sliced Pandesal, I have mistaken it as a Crosstini!
It was so good and not an ordinary Pandesal. It was from a family heirloom recipe.
Adobo Pâté with sliced Pandesal

Pandesal with Vigan Longganisa and Kesong Puti

For the main dish, I ordered their Bagnet rice meal that comes together with Pinakbet and Binurong Mangga for salsa.  Bagnet is a deep fried pork's meat.
Chef Danny said that he spent 3 days for the entire preparation of Bagnet. A day was spent for marinating the meat, a day for slow cooking and another day for deep frying.
His Bagnet was cooked then frozen and reheated in the microwave oven before serving but the result is C-R-I-S-P-Y. It was really good like it was cooked on the same day.

Another food blogger has tried the Vigan Longganisa Bento meal. This is good mainly for 2 persons but if you have a big appetite, then a bento meal is the right one for you.
It has hefty servings of Plain Rice, Vigan Longganisa (sausage), Pinakbet and Ensaladang Pipino as salsa. It was also served with Sukang Iloco personally concocted by Chef Danny.

Chef Danny quoted that Ilocano food is the almost perfect food since for every dish, it has the different variations of taste that were combined- sweet, sour, salty, bitter and hot (spicy).
The menu of Comida Villas
After our dinner we were treated for a pampering at the Spaoay, an Ilocos themed Wellness Spa, which term lay claim to Spa and Ilocos town, Paoay. Spaoay offer time-honored therapies from the Ilocos region that has a strong belief of the healing touch which is just right next door of Comida Villas.

We were treated first for a foot spa at the second floor near the massage room area.
They have male and female therapists whom are professionally trained and accredited by TESDA. They are also courteous in the same time.

I had the chance to take a hot shower before getting a massage since I sweat so much earlier that day. However, there were no lockers for the customers to put in our bags. I just left my bag inside my massage room while taking a shower. Each one of us had a separate massage room. A privacy for every prospect customer, which matters to me most.

The traditional 1-hour body massage in Spaoay costs P350 only which is fair enough.
I  don't like going to a famous spa in Manila worth P1,000 for a regular body massage and you are being massaged in a big room with 14 other people (7 customers+ 7 masseuse=14) .

Spaoay offers traditional Ilocano treatment for massage and facials make use of herbs- tea tree, mint and coffee. Their body wraps, scrubs, and baths draw on mountain clays, sea salts, and balsamic vinegar. These treatments not only smell delicious, they are also very beneficial for your body.

After the full body massage, we were served with teapot of Salabat (Ginger Brewed Tea) to help remove toxins from the body. It tastes great and also refreshing.
I felt so revitalized that I fell into short nap before dressing up again. My masseuse is really good, she knows what she is doing.

Body Scrub Room

Facial Area
It was a great night of comfort indulgence - food and massage. Food is the most primitive form of comfort. I will come back to Spaoay and try their other services like the Body Scrub but not only that, I will definitely recommend this spa to my relatives and friends as well.

Spaoay is open daily to give alternative and natural healing. Spaoay also provide exclusive hotel and home services. Located along 33-D Timog Avenue in Quezon City, you can call (02)9947596 or 09189256603 for reservations.

BRAND'S® InnerShine® Berry Essence: Now with seven berries!

BRAND'S® InnerShine® Berry Essence is a delicious fruit-based, ready-to-drink essence with extraordinary health benefits. Clearer, sharper vision. Age-defying, healthier-looking skin. Better protection from free radical damage.  This isn't a list of some superhero's extraordinary powers. It's only a sampling of the many health benefits that come with every bottle of the new InnerShine® Berry Essence (IBE).

Made by BRAND'S®, a company with a pioneering presence in the health and wellness industry for the last 170 years, InnerShine® Berry Essence is a delicious fruit-based, ready-to-drink essence that serves as a natural source of vital nutrients and powerful antioxidants. It contains the goodness of seven premium types of berries from Europe and the U.S.—acai berry, bilberry, blackcurrant, chokeberry, cranberry, elderberry, and strawberry—combined to form an exclusive "super berry" blend, providing health, nourishment, and protection in ways that no other fruit-based drinks can.

IBE’s Seven Super Berries
The seven super berries make every bottle of InnerShine® Berry Essence the perfect nutritional drink in today's increasingly stressful modern environment. As you carry out a very hectic and stress-filled work day facing the computer for long hours, exposure to many types of environmental pollution, spending late nights at work, and other situations that may create problems for both your skin and eyes, IBE works to deliver special benefits that promote supple and smooth skin and clearer and healthier vision. The berries, in fact, each have rich antioxidant qualities that help protect the skin and eyes from free radical damage, such as that caused by UV radiation, environmental pollution, and heavy visual workload.

Apart from shielding the eye cells, which make up the human body's most delicate and sensitive sense organs, BRAND'S® InnerShine® Berry Essence also packs vital nutrients that help improve overall health as well as support one's ability to have a beautiful, well-nourished body. The exotic acai berry has been heralded for centuries for the many benefits it brings to the body. Not only is it extremely high in anthocyanins, it has powerful antioxidants that help defend the body against life’s stressors.

The rare bilberry fruit from northern Europe, just like the acai berry, is also rich in anthocyanins to strengthen and protect the eyes’ blood vessels and help lessen eye fatigue, while the blackcurrant further enhances eye health with its unique ability to synthesize a biological pigment called rhodopsin (or "visual purple") that enables vision in low-light conditions.

Filtering intense sunlight and providing increased protection from constant exposure to UV radiation is the role of the chokeberry, a shrub fruit native to eastern North America. Thanks to its high levels of anthocyanins and flavonoids, chokeberry is also known as a dietary deterrent against diseases caused by oxidative stress.

Cranberry, on the other hand, is a nourishing fruit with a balanced profile of Vitamin C, dietary fiber, manganese, and essential phytonutrients. They are known to help protect the body from free radical damage, optimize urinary tract health and provide important anti-inflammatory benefits. Also with similar health-boosting capacities is the elderberry, which helps boost the immune system by driving the production of cytokines, the cell-signaling proteins used to regulate immune response.

Rounding out the IBE's set of seven super berries is the sweet, bright red strawberry. Like the cranberry and elderberry, it packs Vitamin C, dietary fiber, and phytonutrients. Strawberries have also recently been linked to the prevention of heart disease and diabetes, while stimulating proteins with antioxidant qualities.

Specially formulated with these seven super berries, BRAND'S® delicious new InnerShine® Berry Essence indeed packs a healthy punch. A chilled bottle a day of IBE not only serves to build a strong foundation for a lifestyle of health and wellness; it also brings the thought of having extraordinary powers closer than we can ever imagine.

Experience the “berry” goodness with a cool twist – chilled! What’s more, InnerShine® Berry Essence is sheer delight to the taste buds. Savour this fruity berry blend on its own – it is delicious chilled – or add it to clear soda water for that extra zing.

Best served chilled.
Recommended for daily consumption.
Suitable for vegetarian.

Available at Watsons, Landmark supermarkets, and Mercury Drug stores in the Greater Manila area at an SRP of P85 per bottle, BRAND'S® IBE is also fortified with Vitamins A, C, E, and zinc. It contains no added artificial colorings or preservatives, and bursts with an irresistible all-natural taste that also remains unrivaled by regular diet drinks and artificial supplements.

Lotte Xylitol Neo Dental Health Gum: Small But Powerful

Small is the new big. Think cameras, mobile phones, tablets and other gadgets. As digital technology moves fast forward in this millennial age, more and more people will be on the go; the “one-touch”, “all-in-one” system will touch more lives, making small become even  smaller.

Yes, size matters. And with highly mobile people getting more health-conscious nowadays, they need to be assured that the health benefits they get should be substantial yet easily realizable. And specifically when it comes to oral health, carrying the small and compact Lotte Xylitol Neo Dental Health Gum becomes a big advantage. What if on certain occasions and days you are in the midst of doing an event, participating in a grueling seminar or just stuck in a whirlwind of work, and brushing or flossing is impossible to squeeze in to your tight schedule?
What if you are on a long road trip and can’t find a fairly clean and decent toilet to do your dental habit routine? Or simply fighting off a craving for sweet, bad-for-the-teeth candy?
That’s when Lotte Xylitol Neo Dental Health Gum comes in handy. Think of it as a pocket-sized dental/oral care kit you can take with you anytime, anywhere, especially if there is no time to brush your teeth or floss! Just bring it and reap the benefits of remineralized teeth for stronger enamel protection as well as fighting bad bacteria that cause tooth decay.

Why is “remineralization” important, and what role does Lotte Xylitol Neo Dental Health Gum play in it? Whenever we eat, our teeth’s surface or the protective layer called “enamel” is threatened by acid-forming bacteria by creating invisible cracks, which then makes it vulnerable to cavities and tooth decay. And this is where Lotte Xylitol Neo Dental Health Gum helps because it contains xylitol, a natural sugar that stops the growth of cavity-causing bacteria to help reduce the risk of tooth decay. Plus it has “calcium phosphates” that help remineralize or rebuild the teeth so it remains strong and healthy for us to keep that toothy and gleaning smile.
Couple brushing with a fluoride-based toothpaste and flossing with the other habits of maintaining good oral hygiene: eating a healthy and well-balanced diet and visiting the dentist once or twice a year, you’re truly on your way to dental health bliss.

Because it’s the small things that count in your life, you can count on Lotte Xylitol Neo Dental Health Gum. With just 2 pellets of Lotte Xylitol Neo Dental Health Gum 4-5 times a day, keep your teeth decay-free and your mouth healthy. Lotte Xylitol Neo Dental Health Gum, which comes in Fresh Mint, Blueberry Mint and Lime.

Mint, is sold and distributed in the Philippines by Lotte Confectionary (Pilipinas) Corp. and is available at major drugstores, supermarkets and convenience stores nationwide. For more information about Lotte Xylitol Neo Dental Health Gum, visit: www.lottexylitolgum.com

Cosmestics: Disadvantages to the Women's Body

Are you a kikay girl?
Maybe you should know what those cosmetics are made up of and what will it bring into your body?!  I don't want to make any women get scared with this post but I am spreading awareness.

Every woman has her own vanity. There's nothing wrong with that. Most woman what to make themselves beautiful for herself and for others. You just need to be careful. How?!
Use organic or vegan cosmetic products, these kind of products are widely available these days and many people opted to use products that has natural and organic ingredients.

It is still better to use less cosmetics. When I was younger, I always put make-up as early as a high school student. Nowadays, I'm on my early 30's now and I seldom put make-up on my face since most foundations I have used clog my pores and develop into pimples. Less make-up is best as it will make you look more natural and younger in the same time.

Diabetes Awareness

The Diabetes Awareness Seminar was held with bloggers together with their relatives whom are diabetics.  It was sponsored by Johnson and Johnson Medical Philippines last May 26, 2012,  Saturday, 8PM at Max’s Restaurant, Gateway Mall in Cubao, Quezon City.

I was with my sister,  Sophia Cabantog and Faustina Marie Cabantog. Upon arriving on the said venue, we were asked to register on the registration area and to also have our blood sugar taken by their med tech using the Johnson and Johnson product , One Touch Glucometer. There is another registration on the blood sugar testing table as there will be a comparison between the before and after dinner blood sugar results.
Myself during the pre-dinner blood sugar testing
The med tech had a hard time getting the blood out so he had to prick me twice, of course it hurts a little and he said sorry but I was still afraid of the thought that I will be pricked.  Results show that I have 133 blood sugar, I am diabetic and it is normal for me to see numbers like that.

My blood sugar results

Next in line was my sister Sophia Cabantog. Bravely, she just do not look on the med tech staff  =)

my sister during the pre-dinner blood sugar testing

Her results is of course as expected lower than mine as she is not diabetic, 91.
Sometimes she even have hypoglycemia and had to eat candy just to boost her blood sugar.

my sister's blood sugar results
After the blood sugar testing, we got a vacant table and took the front seats on the extreme left area of the venue.

The Cabantog sisters

We were served roasted nuts for the appetizer. At exactly 8PM, Max’s waiters had served iced tea and soup of the day (seems like a mushroom soup for me with cabbage).
The opening remarks was being addressed by their intern-OJT Marjorie Chan whom also organized the event
Marjorie Chan

Alex Villareal, 66 years old and one of the speakers for the night who had diabetes for 14 years shared his life story. He even said that you can still live a normal life even if you're diabetic.

Alex Villareal
I learned some points from the speaker, which are:
  • Do not miss any of your medicines, everyday after your meals
  • Do constant monitoring of your blood sugar (because monitoring is a tool for managing the disease) He mentioned that sometimes we do not feel anything but we do not know that our blood sugar may already be high. Also he do monitoring to adjust his medicines under his doctor’s supervision and directions.
  • Do your regular check up – his doctor had advised him a test called foot screening. Persons with diabetes may be at danger of developing foot problems. Therefore it is useful to be screened, at least once a year, to identify the occurrence of neuropathy, or any foot abnormality.
  • Always do exercise – the speaker said he does cycling
  • Do occasional researches on medicines and about diabetes

And at the same time, dinner was served. Pansit Canton, Sweet and Sour Fish Fillet,
Plain Rice, Oriental Beef with Mushroom, and Max’s Fried Chicken. The dessert which was frozen fruit salad was served on the last part of the program.

The Customer Service Representative from Johnson and Johnson, Barbie had introduced the main speaker for the night -  Dr. John G. Flores, M.D., M.Sc., MBA which was mentioned to be an epidemiologist and is based in Singapore. The title of his talk was: An evening with Numbers; So, what?

I learned that in digestion:
  1. Proteins  breaks down to amino acids
  2. Fats breaks down to fatty acids (which are called glycerol in technical terminology)
  3. Carbohydrates breaks down to Glucose
Fats breaks down to fatty acids
The pancreas contains enzyme producing cells that secrete two hormones. The two hormones are insulin and glucose. Insulin and glucose are secreted directly into the bloodstream, and together, they regulate the level of glucose in the blood.

Pancreas is a factory of insulin

Glucose = Fuel
Insulin= Ignition Key

Insulin= Ignition Key

Insulin lowers the blood sugar level and increases the amount of glucose (stored carbohydrate) in the liver.

Insulin is the glucose helper. Allowing glucose (and other nutrients enter the cells and provide ENERGY!

Insulin is the glucose helper

Glucose slowly increases the blood sugar level if it falls too low. If the insulin secreting cells do not work properly, diabetes occurs.

LACK OF INSULIN=DIABETES

Clinical Types of Diabetes
  1. Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus
  2. Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus
  3. Gestational Disease (during pregnancy period)
Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus vs. Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus
Type 1 DM has destroyed pancreatic beta cells
Type 2 DM has decreased insulin secretion and insulin resistance
destroyed pancreatic beta cells

Insulin Deficiency
Insulin resistance - too much fat gets in the way of Insulin
Risk Factors causing Diabetes
  1. Stress
  2. Sedetary lifestyle (inactive, couch potato, etc)
  3. Medications (hormones, steroids)
  4. Pregnancy
  5. Open Heart Surgery
Risk Factors

How do we know if someone has Diabetes?
  • Ancient Egyptians taste their urine
  • If the urine has attracted ants

Normal fasting glucose should be between 70-100mg/dl

200+  Symptoms

200mg/dl + symptoms = Diabetic

  1. extreme thirst
  2. dry skin
  3. frequent urination
  4. blurred vision
  5. nausea
  6. drowsiness
  7. hunger
Hyperglycemia - high blood glucose
Hyperglycemia Symptoms

An American spent his vacation here in the Philippines. He enjoyed so much of the Filipino food. When he got back in the US, he was rushed to the hospital. Why?
His dog ate his toes while he was sleeping!

  • Glucose control is one of the cornerstones of diabetes management
  • Good glucose control means
    • Fasting Plasma Glucose of 70-130mg/dl
    • Post-prandial glucose of less than 180mg/dl

I find the seminar very informative. Although it might scare others but I believe that everyone should be open minded and also to be aware that having a healthy lifestyle and eating habits will ensure a healthy body. There was a question and answer portion after the small talk and Dr. Flores had answered all questions smartly as he had thorough knowledge about the subject. After such, a program evaluation form were distributed to us.

Before the program ended, they raffled out some prizes like Brent and Sam’s Triple Chocolate Bliss Cookies. Its good for diabetics, it is low-sugar and low in calories.
One of the winners was my sister, Sophia Cabantog.

And also Nita Mehta’s Cookbook for Controlling Diabetes Vegetarian Recipes in which I was also a winner. I browsed the cookbook and it is very nice as it has colorful recipe pictures inside but I am just not sure if the ingredients are all readily available locally as the author is a Hindu. There are also some ingredients in their Hindi name equivalent.

The program ended at exactly 10PM and as agreed, there will be a blood sugar testing comparison 2 hours after eating dinner. My sister’s  blood sugar result changed from 91 to 128.

Mine only increased to 1 point which is from 133 to 134 as I had drink my medication Metformin Glumet after my meal.

Upon exiting the venue, freebies were waiting outside for the participants.
It includes One Touch memo Pad, ballpen and flyers.

Its true, it can have serious side effects (cardiovascular illness, kidney and liver complications, blindness, infections and even the loss of limbs), but as long as one follows one’s doctor’s advice, including religiously taking the prescribed medications, one can live a fairly normal life. Diabetes is a lifestyle disease. Millions of diabetics live a long, healthy life by taking care of their day-to-day health, and so can you!
