Korean Film Festival underscores family time

Drawing in from the interest of the Filipinos in Korean popular culture, the Embassy of the Republic of Korea will be highlighting the importance of family time in the upcoming Korean Film Festival on September 18 to October 7.

The Manila leg is scheduled on September 18 to 23 at SM Megamall, and will head to SM City Baguio on September 26 to 30. SM City Cebu, on the other hand, will be hosting the Visayan leg on October 3 to 7.

The Korean Film Festival, now on its fourth year, will be spearheaded by the Korean Cultural Center and will be featuring seven family-themed top-grossing films.
The films to be screened are Jeon Woo Chi (전우치), Spellbound (오싹한연애), Bunt (날아라 허동구), A Barefoot Dream (맨발의 꿈), Late Blossom (그대를 사랑합니다), Arahan (아라한 장풍 대작전) and Highway Star (복면달호).

In Ho Hwang, the director of ‘Spellbound’ will be flying in the Philippines to talk about the contemporary Korean film on the Hallyu Forum on September 14. His film is an unusual mix of horror and romance, and focuses on the love story between road magician Jo-goo and the muse for his overnight success, Yu-ri. Yu-ri is haunted by ghosts and Jo-goo, who falls in love with her, has to rise above his fears to save the two of them.

On the other hand, the film ‘Jeon Woo Chi’ tells the story of the eponymous playful apprentice who gets imprisoned in a scroll, having been wrongfully accused for murder. He gets freed 500 years later as a last resort to bring back the order into the world.
‘Bunt’ deals with the mentally-challenged Dong-ku who suddenly finds himself without ‘use’ upon the arrival of water purifiers. In an attempt to use his only capabilty, Dong-ku finds himself joining the baseball team.

The sports drama ‘A Barefoot Dream’ is a story of a former soccer prospect who heads to his dreams, the International Youth Soccer Championship, albeit with numerous almost-failures of detours.

Also in the list is the drama ‘Late Blossom,’ a heartwarming film on the lives of the two couples living not far apart from each other. It follows the two couples’ respective struggles on life and love.

‘Arahan’ follows the story of the honest yet clumsy rookie policeman Sang-hwan and the martial arts specialist Eui Jin. Together they fight the evil Heuk-woon whose greed wreaks havoc to mankind.

Capping off the list is the musical-comedy ‘Highway Star’ which tells the story of Dal-Ho and his dream. Dal-Ho wants to become a famous rock singer, but was forced to play trot to make ends meet. He later gets the chance to release an album but belatedly realized that he has to sing trot instead of rock n’ roll. His shame drives him to hide his face but his voice and his mysteriousness catapult him to unprecedented success.

Admission is free and is on a first-come, first-served basis. 

FASHION/FOCUS: Fashion Film Workshop

The British Council in partnership with the Ayala Museum will have a 3-day workshop on fashion film from 16 - 18 October 2012 at the Ayala Museum.

Fashion Film is a growing trend among fashion designers and an area of fashion communication in which the UK has a leading position.  It is an alternative medium for fashion designers who would like to tell the story of their collection apart from presenting their work in a catwalk show.        

The workshop will be facilitated by Belfast born Kathryn Ferguson who is a filmmaker and curator. She completed a Masters in Communication, Art & Design at The Royal College of Art in June 2011 where she specialised in experimental film. Previous to the RCA Kathryn had studied on the Fashion Communication BA at Central Saint Martins graduating in 2005. In between courses she made many short films for fashion designers and musicians including Richard Nicoll, Charlie Le Mindu, Katie Eary, Lady Gaga and Domino Records. These films have been featured on MTV, SHOWstudio, Dazed Digital, Bubblebyte, the BBC and in Vogue.

As well as her own filmmaking practise Kathryn also works as a Curator and Lecturer. She began curating the annual Birds Eye View Film Festival's 'Fashion Loves Film' strand at the Institute of Contemporary Arts & British Film Institute in 2008 where it continued until 2011.

Kathryn will be in Manila to facilitate the fashion film workshop as well as showcase a specially curated selection of 10 films from the UK.

This fashion film workshop will take students to the central aspects of the filmmaking process.  The workshop includes an illustrated introduction to film language using examples of fashion film; introductions to planning, shooting and editing video. Participants then plan, film and edit a simple sequence.

The workshop is open to people with a background in fashion design, filmmaking and make-up.

PMAP: Meralco wins Employer of the Year Award

The People Management Association of the Philippines (PMAP) opened its 49^th Annual Conference with a showcase of Filipino talent, technical innovation and inspiring messages from respected leaders from both private and public organizations at Waterfront Hotel in Lahug, Cebu City yesterday.

The 3-day event dubbed as the biggest gathering of HR professionals and people managers in the country is one of the many ways where PMAP helps in developing enlightened, competent, socially responsible and influential people managers who can actively participate in nation building.

With the theme, Revolutionizing People Management: Great Minds, Bold Changes, Unparalleled Results, this year’s Conference reflects the wave of revolutions on the political front and how businesses and organizations share the same challenge of not only changing leaders but also changing the way leaders manage people.

After the amazing opening program that features a flash mob, shadow dance, marching cadets and the grand entrance of PMAP Past Presidents, current officers and board of directors and Presidents of the twenty-two PMAP chapters nationwide, Meralco President and CEO Oscar S. Reyes delivered a rousing speech to the delegates.

He talked about how innovation and technology has helped in the growth and development of the country and sent a challenge to everyone that day, “Much can be done in a relatively short period of time. Others have done it and we too can do it. But we should work for it.”

Education Secretary Armin A. Luistro gave an equally motivating talk and even confessed that PMAP is one of the few organizations that has convinced him to wear a suit as he is used to delivering speech in barong. He talks about leadership and describe a good leader as someone who knows “what happens in the heart and mind of those we are leading.”

Later in the evening, Meralco was recognized as the 2012 Employer of the Year (EOY) during the 36^th edition of the PMAP Awards. The company became only the third organization to receive the recognition more than one after 32 years since it got the first award.  Unilab  (1979 and 2001) and Del Monte Philippines (1998 and 2003) are the other companies who accomplished the feat.  No less than Meralco Chairman Manny V. Pangilinan himself led the delegation of the company who received the prestigious award on stage.

The other awardee in last night’s festivities was the Bank of Philippine Island, 1990 EOY winner, which took this year’s People Program of the Year (PPY) award.

Day 2 starts with keynote address from Scott D. Anthony, President of Innosight and a Harvard Business Press author, followed by insights from Ranjay Gulati, Chair of Harvard Business School’s Advanced Management Program.  To speak on innovative people strategies, PMAP tapped Chandramogan Anamirtham, General Manager of Hitachi Global Storage Philippines and Victorico P. Vargas, President and CEO of Maynilad Water Services.  Plenary Session 3 features BPI President and CEO Aurelio R. Montinola III with Louis Allen Worldwide CEO J.P. Miller and Independent Consultant and Executive Coach Smriti Ahuja as reactors.

Plenary Session 4 highlights perspectives in accelerating talent development in Global Asia, featuring Executive Director, Conference Board-Asia Pacific Nick Sutcliffe; Global Learning Solutions CEO Roger Collantes; and BPAP President and CEO Benedict C. Hernandez. The theme weaver is Steven J. Dekrey, President of the Asian Institute of Management.

The third day of the Conference will feature breakout sessions and workshops with topics on Talent Acquisition; Organizational Change, People Productivity and People Engagement.  There will also be a site best practice tour that will showcase best practices of four companies based in Cebu City.  Delegates will also be able to actively participate in creating and managing their own agenda around the central theme of the Conference through Open Space technology

33rd Manila International Book Fair: September 12-16

It's real a great time for us to enter the world of books, interesting and rare books!  Sometimes, bookstores aren’t supposed to be places where people whisper, where people laugh and gasp but book fairs where people get excited.  They are what book fairs are for. Books are the best friends one can ever have and reading habit gives us a refreshing experience and we come to learn a lot about achievers, great leaders and admirable people.

The Manila International Book Fair (MIBF), the country’s biggest and longest-running book fair, heads back to the SMX Convention Center, Pasay City on Sept. 12-16, once again celebrating the power of the written word.

For 33 years now, the MIBF has certainly stood the test of time.  Weathering economic fluctuations, political scenarios, the changing Filipino lifestyle, and the advent of new technologies, the MIBF has successfully evolved from an event for the industry and the academe into an attraction that draws readers of all ages, from all walks of life. And after three decades, its objective has remained the same: to bring books closer to the Filipino people by promoting good reading habits and providing a venue for the exchange of ideas among the players in the industry.
