This fish is native to the Indo-Pacific region and is sought after for its tasty flesh. Juveniles
inhabit sandy shorelines and shallow sandy or muddy bays near river
mouths while adults move out in schools to clear seaward reefs,
juveniles occur in small schools, while adults are usually solitary,
However when cultured in cages, they ate observed to form schools. In
nature they are reported to feed primarily on sand mollusks and other
hard-shelled invertebrates but they adapt very well to extruded feeds
in pellet form which are now produced commercially. They reach sexual
maturity in three years.
